First let me acknowledge the title of this effort. The idea came from a short story by Jorge Luis Borges called "The Garden of Forking Paths". Borges was one of Argentina's finest authors, and a pdf of his complex short story can downloaded by clicking here.
I like the idea of "Forked Paths" a lot because it describes the non-linearity of life and creativity. It's an acknowledgement that the mind is a labyrinth of multiple directions, a buffet of disparate dishes some of which are spicy and others bland.
Here's how I have set up my buffet of ideas:
Visual Research Lab
Since the emergence of the graphic computer in the late 1980's, I have thought that the time is ripe for a new Renaissance in image creation, particularly in my own field of photography. With Photoshop it is possible to attain a level of perfection in pictures that would have previously been very difficult. So my question is, "I know I can make more perfect pictures, but what is the visual breakthrough that will usher in the new concepts that we have not yet imagined?" Like the conquering of perspective in the 15th century, or the birth of Impressionism in the 19th century, what nascent forms of imaging are developing now? The Visual Research Lab dabbles with some ideas, none perhaps as lofty as I've described, but interesting directions for me.
Photoshop
I spend a lot of time with Adobe Photoshop and will be the first to admit that I have learned only a fraction of the program. But here is a place to share some of what I do know. Since I was a teacher for 33 years, this is perhaps a didactic compensation of retirement.
Thinking and Writing
Here's an area where I've put my thoughts to words on a variety of topics from the history of photography to the genesis of the photographic impulse.
Image Directions
These are some of my favorite images in a variety of directions including architecture, travel, landscape, etc.
